On the 25th July 2009, a group of fundraisers from Johnshaven took part in their annual sponsored walk which saw them raise almost £3000 for charity.
The motley crew of 40 known as ‘The Shipwrecks’ set out from the Ship Hotel in Johnshaven at 11am, on a 12 mile route which would take them to Gourdon and Inverbervie – visiting every pub on the way – before returning to their start point at 6pm.
The total sum of £2,532 was split equally between Alzheimers Scotland and the children’s charity; the Archie Foundation.
This is the third year that the "Shipwreck" walk has taken place. Team member, James Grosset, took time out from his role as Director at AquaTerra Solutions to join his family and friends for the event.
James commented: “Each year it gets better. It’s a brilliant day for all of us and such a fantastic way to raise money. Everyone was in such high spirits, the weather was great and pub stops were all a welcoming encouragement. We’re already looking forward to our 2010 walk and hope to raise a similar amount once again.”
James’s son, Sandy, was the youngest member of the team. Aged four years old, the young lad also joined older sister, Catriona, and mum, Eileen - four months pregnant at the time - and dog, Bella.
The Shipwrecks team helped to raise the cash, by selling t-shirts, gaining sponsorship and taking collection buckets into all the local pubs that lay on their route.
The Ship Hotel provided refreshments for the adventurers on their return, as well as hosting a disco in the evening for those who had taken part.
