AquaTerra Solutions Completes Rowan Rig Upgrades

A specialist rigging team from Aberdeen-based, AquaTerra Solutions, has successfully completed a three month programme of modifications to the Rowan Viking drilling rig.
The total contract – worth in excess of £1million – included assembling and installing AquaTerra providing heat shielding to the derrick and crane structures of the recently completed jack-up rig situated in Dundee harbour.
AquaTerra provided a 12 man specialist rigging crew and, with sections weighing more than 45 tons being lifted to a height of 325ft, said significant planning with the highest levels of safety and communication were paramount in such a heavy lift, work-at-height project. High winds delayed the start of the operation but work was completed smoothly and safely.
The Rowan Viking is due to go to the Elgin Franklin through a contract by Total. Rowan’s Project Manager, Graham Bagnell said: “we have met our primary target with regard to our focus on safety on this project and much of that is due to the professionalism and guidance provided by AquaTerra to the project team.”
AquaTerra has, in addition, completed several projects for Rowan including dropped objects inspection, development of competence assurance schemes and work at height, rescue and confined space training and rescue equipment supply.
Pete Robinson, Aquaterra’s Director, said: “We’re delighted to have concluded this project, which provided us with the opportunity to demonstrate further expertise and I’m particularly pleased by the spread of work we have been able to offer Rowan.”
The company employs around 15 office staff and about 50 contract workers. As part of AquaTerra’s growth strategy, the company is moving to larger premises in Midmill Industrial Estate, Kintore later this year.
